Day 04: Dead Sea - Bethany - Madaba - Mt. Nebo - Petra

Before drive to Petra, on the route visit Bethany. Religious site of Bethany to explore first-hand the foundations of Christianity. The site of John the Baptist's settlement at Bethany where Jesus was baptized has long been known from the Bible and from Byzantine and medieval texts. The site has now been identified on the east bank of the Jordan River in Jordan, only 15 minutes by car from the Dead Sea Hotel. The Bethany area site formed part of the early Christian pilgrimage route between Jerusalem, the Jordan River, and Mount Nebo. This area is also associated with the biblical account of how the Prophet Elijah (Mar Elias in Arabic) ascended to heaven in a whirlwind on a chariot of fire. This is not to be confused with the village of Bethany near Jerusalem, where the Bible says Lazarus was raised from the dead.

After Bethany tour drive to Mount Nebo, the reputed burial site of Moses, overlooking the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea. Visit a mosaic school and workshop where you will have the opportunity to learn about these incredible crafts and to have a masterclass by one of the most experienced mosaic artists.

Continue to visit the mosaic city of Madaba, where an ancient map of the Holy Land is set on the floor of Saint George's Church.

Begin your walk (or ride) at the imposing “Siq” a winding canyon road. At the end, you’ll gaze in total amazement at Petra’s most extraordinary monument - the towering Treasury building rising over 140 feet. Beyond that, discover soaring temples, elaborate royal tombs, a theatre, burial chambers, and water channels – all remnants of a once great Nabatean culture.

After Petra Tour, drive to Wadi Rum, this is a stupendous, timeless place, virtually untouched by humanity and its destructive forces. Here, it is the weather and winds that have carved the imposing, towering skyscrapers, so elegantly described by T.E. Lawrence as “vast, echoing and God-like...".

During our tours Bedouins will share information about plants and the way they use them. For example, “Anabasis Articulate” they use for washing purposes as it can foam and clean. And dead plants are useful as firewood. And for those who would like to participate in Bedouin’s life, they can assist us in collecting firewood. They will use this wood to provide you with delicious Bedouin’s tea.
