These meteors are caused by streams of cosmic debris called\u00a0meteoroids\u00a0entering\u00a0Earth’s atmosphere\u00a0at extremely high speeds on parallel trajectories. Most meteors are smaller than a grain of sand, so almost all of them disintegrate and never hit the Earth’s surface.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In most years, the most visible meteor shower is the\u00a0Perseids, which peak on 12 August of each year at over one meteor per minute. NASA has a\u00a0tool\u00a0to calculate how many meteors per hour are visible from one’s observing location.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Perseids<\/b>\u00a0are a prolific\u00a0meteor shower\u00a0associated with the\u00a0comet Swift\u2013Tuttle\u00a0that are usually visible from mid-July\u00a0to late-August. The\u00a0meteors\u00a0are called the Perseids because they appear from the general direction of the\u00a0constellation\u00a0Perseus\u00a0and in more modern times have a\u00a0radiant\u00a0bordering on\u00a0Cassiopeia\u00a0and\u00a0Camelopardalis.<\/p>\n

The Perseid meteor shower is an annual event that takes place between July and August, with its highest activity between the 11th and 13th of August. In 2023, the shower began on July 17th and end on August 24th. The peak of the meteor shower will occur on the night of the 12th and before dawn on 13 August, during which you may witness up to 100 meteors per hour! It\u2019s worth noting that the moon rises around 3 AM, so the best time to see shooting stars is during the evening and very early morning.<\/p>\n
